Use paper or plastic cups to start your Dahlia seeds (if you don’t have seedling trays). Make sure to make some holes at the base of the cups for drainage.
Fill ¾ of the cup with the potting mix and moisten the soil with a spray.
Place two dahlia seeds in each cup (2 inch diameter cups) and cover with a sprinkling of soil (1/2 inch) and moisten with the watering spray.
Place the cups in a brightly lit indoor space and keep the soil moist by watering it every day.
The seeds will germinate in 5-6 days, once the seedlings are 3 inches tall prune away the weaker seedling and let the stronger seedling grow. Keep it in bright indirect light and water regularly.
Transplant the seedling to the main growing pot after 15-20 days when the seedling appears strong. Take care to not damage the root ball.
Place it in an area outside or your window that gets at least 5-6 hours of sun through the day. Make sure to water regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
Never water in peak sun. Spray it with neem oil solution once every week after transplanting and feed your plant a good fertiliser that supports blooming (NPK 19:19:19) once every three weeks for bigger blooms.
Your dahlias will start flowering in approximately 7 to 8 weeks from sowing, under ideal conditions.
