Use paper or plastic cups to start your Sunflower seeds (if you don’t have seeding trays). Make sure to make some holes at the base of the cups for drainage.
Fill ¾ of the cup with the potting mix and moisten the soil with a spray.
Place one sunflower seed in each cup (2 inch diameter cups) and cover with a sprinkling of soil to completely cover the seed (1/2 inch) and moisten with the watering spray.
Place the cups in a brightly lit indoor space and keep the soil moist by watering it every day.
The seeds will germinate in 4-5 days, once the seedlings have a pair of true leaves (5-6 leaves in total), transplant them to the final growing pot.
Do not plant more than 2 seedlings in a 21 cm pot. Keep the plants out in an area that receives at least 5-6 hours of sun and water them regularly to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
Never water in peak sun. Spray it with neem oil solution once every week after transplanting and feed your plant a good fertiliser that supports blooming (NPK 19:19:19) once every three weeks for bigger blooms.
Your sunflowers will start flowering in approximately 12 to 14 weeks from sowing, under ideal conditions.
